Assistant Coach at UCLA...
On a daily basis we worked on Offense as a unit of 5 or I broke it down into groups consisting of weakside and strongside. Our offensive philosophy was similar to the SA Spurs. Move the ball from side to side and use movement and unselfishness to break the defense down. Below are some daily duties @ UCLA
-
I was responsible for working on our Motion Offense and our 1-4 Offense on a daily basis.
-
I was responsible for implementing 1 on 1 and 2 on 2 drills to run weakside responsibilities in our system.
-
I broke down strong side and weak side responsibilities in our offensive system every day.
-
I worked on individual "Bigs" and "Smalls" moves that would work into our Offensive Philosophy.
-
I was responsible for Screening, Cutting, Fill Cutting etc., responsibilities associated with Motion and the 1-4.
Daily Offense Flex/1-4

Game Scouting Reports
I was responsible for every scouting report that was done over 4 seasons. If we talk I'll explain why. Most programs split the seasons reports up among the 4 coaches. Coach Lavin decided he liked how I scouted and that was that.
Scouting at a place like UCLA is vital to understanding everything from personel, to plays and so on. More importantly I would look for specific tendencies and really how much heart did specific players have. I looked for a lot of little things that most coaches wouldn't, but I used to go scout games with my Dad and I'd watch what hee was looking for and what was important to his evaluation and I've done the same.
-
Break down all opponent video for all the games we had.
-
Create Edit Tape consisting of all offensive set plays, motion, out of bounds, side entry and gimic plays.
-
Create seprate edit consisting of all personel on the upcoming opponent. Paying attention to tendencies, right or left, how hard does he play, range on jump shot, can we exploit him on defense, etc.
-
Draw up initial game plan based on my report meaning should we press, we need to really get out and run because they sare lazy, etc. I would give Coach Lavin and Coach Howland the report along with my suggestions then we'd go over it as a staff then make final edits.
Underclassman Individual Workout

I love individual workouts. This is where the athlete grows on a daily basis. Its rewarding to teach certain players and you get to watch their development over time. Great teams are made during indivdual workout time.
-
Some NBA players that I personally worked out from time to time at UCLA, Baron Davis, Jason Kapono, Jordan Farmar, Trevor Ariza, Josh Shipp, Arron Aflalo, Matt Barnes, and the list goes on.
-
Daily find a way to keep the individual workouts fresh and new but not by sacraficing the integrity of the drill.
-
I was responsible for making sure we stayed on schedule during practice so their were no surprises and we could keep practice moving at a fast pace.
-
After practice or the workout I would break tape down of their workouts and figure out where the player is improving and where more work needs to be done.

Fun Facts About Coach Geniesse
My Family, My Religion, My Education, and My Faith
As you can see above, my priorities keep me focused on the daily life. I thought this page is interesting for someone to look at that might not know me. It shows what I'm passionate about in life. It shows my motivations, passions and love for life. I hope to have the opportunity to share my experiences which have been bestowed upon me in forms of blessings.

My Family
In the picture above, shown from left to right are my father Mike, my brother, John Paul, my Mother Mary Jane and my brother Jeff.
I'm so proud of all of them. They are the reason I am who I am today. I'm blessed that I have such an amazing family. They helped keep me in line when I may have wanted to take a shortcut. They have helped me realize that sacrifice is something we all must practice to be great! I love them with my whole heart.

My Loving Wife
My wife is my guardian angel... NO QUESTION ABOUT IT! She quite simply is the most compassionate, gentle, kind, funny, generous, empathetic people I will ever have the pleasure of meeting! She is my driving force in all I do, and I know that the passion and energy she brings daily is directly making me the best person I can be! I love you honey and my family and I are so blessed you came into our lives.

Our Children
My children are the source of where my passion comes from. They make me feel like there is nothing in the world that can defeat me because of how precious they are. They are never ending sources of information that just makes me laugh. I love their spirit and who they are both becoming as young adults. I love Sophie and Charlie dearly!

They certainly will keep me young! Yea no more juicing! lol

My Faith
My faith has shaped my life thus far. It helps me when times are hard and its not afraid to not let me get to full of myself. Knowing that I have that devout faith I know that any problem that comes around is fixable. I know that life is not all about a jump shot or a vertical. Life is far deeper and I try to live that faith everyday of my life.

My Education
I was voted in as the President of the Student Body my Senior year in College at the University of Great Falls. I ran to show my young basketball teammates that if you have a goal and the resolve to work harder than you ever thought you could to achieve it, makes ANYTHING POSSIBLE.
I love to lead and I proved to my team my senior year that all things are possible with hard work.

Coach Wooden
During my visits with Coach Wooden he would invite me in to chat with him while he signed autographs. I was taught a lifetime of lessons by this amazing man in a mere 4 years because he took the time to make me important. I look forward to sharing some of my stories about Coach Wooden with you and hopefully some of his lessons..
